Got Sensitive Skin in Intimate Places? 10 Tips for Managing Vulva Sensitivity

We all know how important it is to feel comfortable in our own skin—especially when it comes to intimate areas. But let’s be honest: vulva sensitivity is more common than we think and still not talked about enough.

Whether it’s hormonal changes, hygiene habits, or external factors like clothes, a lot can lead to sensitive skin around your vulva. The good news is that there are a few simple changes you can make that can help manage vulva sensitivity and keep you comfortable (and happy!) Here are our top ten recommended tips, below.

1. Switch to gentle, unscented products

When it comes to personal care products for your vulva, less is often more. Avoid harsh soaps, scented lotions, and any product that might irritate your skin. Instead, choose gentle, fragrance-free options that are designed specifically for sensitive areas.

A mild, pH-balanced cleanser can make all the difference by helping to maintain your skin's natural barrier without stripping it of its natural oils.

2. Hydrate and moisturize your vulva

Dry skin can exacerbate vulvar sensitivity, so moisturizing is key. Look for a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer designed for intimate areas. Aloe vera, coconut oil, and vitamin E are all great ingredients that could potentially help to soothe and hydrate sensitive skin. Applying a moisturizer after showering or bathing can help keep your vulva soft and comfortable. Remember, hydration doesn’t stop at lotion. Drinking plenty of water is just as important for keeping your skin healthy.

3. Wear breathable fabrics (Yes, cotton underwear)

Your choice of underwear plays a huge role in how your vulva feels. Tight-fitting, synthetic fabrics like polyester trap heat and moisture, which can lead to irritation. Opting for cotton underwear lets your skin breathe and reduces the risk of irritation and infections. Cotton is soft, breathable, and gentle—exactly what your vulva needs to stay comfortable.

Even more, if you’re on your period, opt for DIVA’s period underwear, made for less irritation and more leak-free protection.

4. Natural fabrics everywhere (Including bedding)

It’s not just about what you wear on your body—your sheets and clothes matter too. Consider switching to natural fabrics like cotton or silk for your bedding. These fabrics are gentle on your skin and allow it to breathe. Sleeping in natural fibers can help reduce sweating and friction, both of which can irritate the vulva. Plus, you’ll feel extra luxurious in silk sheets. Win-win!

5. Be mindful of shaving and waxing

Shaving and waxing the genital area can cause micro-tears in the skin, leading to bumps, redness, and irritation. If you prefer hair removal, try using a sharp razor and shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation. Or, if you’re looking for a break, trimming the hair might be a gentler option.

If you consistently experience irritation from shaving or waxing, it may be time to consider a longer-lasting solution, like laser hair removal, or go au’ naturale.

7. Apply a cold compress for immediate relief

Sometimes irritation happens in the moment, and if you’re in need of quick relief, a cold compress can feel really great!. Simply wet a clean cloth with cold water and apply it to the sensitive area for a few minutes. The cool temperature may help reduce inflammation, calm irritation, and ease discomfort.

8. Take your probiotics

A healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina and vulva can help prevent irritation and infection. Probiotics are your friend here! They’re packed with beneficial bacteria that could potentially support vaginal health and can help maintain a balanced microbiome. You can find probiotics in:

  • Supplement form

  • Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi

  • Tablet form

9. Talk to a medical professional

Sometimes, you just need to see a healthcare professional. Conditions like eczema, vulvodynia (chronic vulvar pain), or infections like yeast or bacterial vaginosis can cause ongoing discomfort. A doctor can help identify any underlying conditions and recommend appropriate treatments. Don’t hesitate to get help if something doesn’t feel right—it’s always better to address potential issues early on!

As always, your vulva deserves love, care, and attention — please consult your doctor before using any additional ingredients in your vulva care routine.
